Here are the general procedures to obtain a new passport in New York, both online and offline:
- To apply for a passport, you must schedule an appointment. Call 1-877-487-2778 or 1-888-874-7793 (TDD/TTY) to schedule an appointment.
- To guarantee that you are outside our agency’s entrance when your appointment time rolls around, we advise that you arrive 15 minutes early. To enter the premises, you must present a legitimate government ID. Anything but water in a sealable bottle and weapons are prohibited. Before checking in, you must go through security screening.
- Fill out Form DS-11: You can fill out this form online or print it out and complete it by hand. Make sure to fill it out completely and accurately.
- Gather required documents: You will need to provide proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, as well as a government-issued photo ID. You will also need to provide a passport photo.
- Pay the application fee: The fee for a new passport is currently $110 for adults, plus an additional $35 execution fee. You can pay by check, money order, or credit card. Further details check here.
- Submit your application: Bring your completed DS-11 form, required documents, passport photo, and payment to your appointment at the passport acceptance facility. A representative will review your application and accept it if everything is in order.
- Track your application: You can track the status of your passport application online using the U.S. Department of State’s website.
- Receive your new passport: Once your application has been processed, your new passport will be mailed to you.
Documents and Eligibility
- Citizenship: You must be a U.S. citizen to apply for a U.S. passport. You will need to provide proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or a previously-issued U.S. passport.

Eligibility

Processing Time
However, as of March 2023, the U.S. Department of State currently estimates the following processing times for routine passport applications:
- Routine service: 10-12 weeks from the date of application submission, including processing and mailing time.
- If you need your passport sooner than the standard processing time, you can request expedited service for an additional fee of $60. With expedited service, the processing time is estimated to be 4-6 weeks, including processing and mailing time.
Validity
- For adults age 16 and older: 10 years
- For minors under age 16: 5 years
