How to get Flim Shooting Permission in New York, USA?: Procedure, Documents Required

How to get Flim Shooting Permission in New York, USA?: Procedure, Documents Required

Applications for film permits are being accepted by the film office for production activities. The laws, regulations, and guidelines of New York State and the City of New York must be followed when producing media in the city.

  • Contact the local film office in the vicinity of the proposed shooting location. The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) in New York is an important resource.
  • Productions without a claim to exclusive use of City land, without the use of prop weapons, prop vehicles, stunts, or actors dressed as police officers, and without demanding parking privileges for production cars, are NOT required to get a permit.
  • Using a hand-held camera while standing on a city sidewalk, walkway of a city bridge or in a city park without otherwise claiming exclusive use of city property DOES NOT require a permit.
  • It DOES NOT apply to the $300 non-refundable application fee. Productions that don’t claim exclusive use of City property, don’t use prop weapons or prop vehicles, don’t perform stunts with actors dressed in uniform, and don’t ask for parking privileges for production vehicles are eligible to apply for an optional permit.
  • Optional permits should be submitted to 212-262-7677 when finished. In order to get the authorised permission, applicants MUST supply a fax number; alternatively, permits must be brought personally to the Film Office at 1697 Broadway, 6th Floor, Monday through Friday from 9:00am-4:00pm.
  • There is a $300 non-refundable application fee. Productions with equipment* packages, production vehicles asking parking rights (apart from personal vehicles, minivans, SUVs, and pick-up trucks), claiming exclusive use of City property, prop guns, prop vehicles, actors dressed as police officers, or stunts on set are all subject to the requirement to get a necessary permit. Insurance is necessary.
  • Inform the neighborhood’s people and businesses about your shoot. Give specifics about the schedule, any hiccups, and who to contact with queries or concerns.
  • If your shoot involves road closures or other actions that could affect traffic or public safety, work with your local law authorities to coordinate.
  • A review of your application will take place. Please be patient and receptive to any requests for additional information since this may involve numerous agencies.
  • Finalise the logistics with the film office, the neighbourhood council, and the property owners once you have received approval.
  • Make sure your manufacturing complies with every requirement included in the permit.

Documents Requirement

  • The majority of film offices will provide you an application form to complete. Make sure you give precise and thorough information about your project.
  • It is common to need proof of insurance protection. To cover any potential damages or accidents that might occur during the shoot, this might include liability insurance.
  • You might require a written authorization from the property owner if you plan to shoot on private land. You could require a location agreement from the applicable government agency if it is a public area.
  • Describe your shooting schedule in great detail, including the dates, hours, and locations of your shoot. This aids the administration in comprehending the effect on the region and making appropriate plans.
  • Give a thorough description of your project, including the type of shoot, the tools you’ll be utilising, and any special effects or stunts that will be used.
  • Provide proof that you informed the neighborhood’s people and businesses about your shoot. Flyers, emails, and letters are examples of this.
  • Be ready to pay any required permission fees. Depending on elements like the scope of the production and the length of the shoot, the sum may change.
  • You might be required to submit an environmental impact assessment and get additional licences if your shoot contains actions that potentially have a negative impact on the environment.
  • In particular, if your shoot involves road closures or other activities that could influence public safety, coordinate with your local law enforcement and give any notifications or preparations for police support that are necessary.
